What counts as a stem
A stem is one logical part exported from song start to end at the same time and tempo. Think DRUMS, BASS_DI, VOCAL_LEAD or GTR_RHYTHM_L. Not scattered clips on the timeline — the mixer imports everything at once and it must align.
For mix production in Amsterdam we ask for a track list (spreadsheet or text) with name, source (DI/mic), tuning and notes. That avoids guessing which guitar is double and which is lead.
Audio formats and bit depth
Deliver uncompressed WAV or AIFF, preferably 24-bit, 48 kHz — common for Dutch streaming and broadcast. 44.1 kHz is fine if the project was built there; avoid mp3 as mix source unless it is the only archive.
Float32 exports from DAWs are acceptable if you document peaks above 0 dBFS as intentional (virtual instruments). Otherwise do not smash normalisation: headroom around -6 dBFS on busy stems is healthy.
Naming and folders
Use short English names, no spaces: underscores or hyphens. One folder per song: Artist_Title_Version/ with all stems plus a REFERENCE rough mix (mp3 or wav) and optional NOTES.txt.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Project | Band_SongName_Demo042 |
| Stem | Vox_Lead_01.wav |
| Tempo file | tempo_120bpm.txt or MIDI click |
Zip large sets or use cloud; share password or link via contact, not in public comments.
Timing, tuning and MIDI
Export from the same start point (bar 1, beat 1) for every stem. If you use pre-roll, note length in samples or bars. Printed vocal tuning in the export is fine, but optionally send a dry double without autotune for the mixer.
MIDI for drums or synths is welcome alongside audio when synths are replaceable. Label key and BPM. Unsure about rights on loops? Check terms — you remain responsible for material you supply.
Sessions recorded at Mormonyra
When we tracked in-house we keep multitracks for 24 months. You can request stem exports at hourly rate or as part of a mix quote. In-studio mix is €88 per hour; offline per track €185; EP up to five songs €720.
Live takes from live ensemble recording often include bleed; we sometimes deliver DI-only variants too. Agree upfront whether you want a rough live blend or tight edits per instrument.
Revisions and expectations
Mix projects typically include 2 revision rounds within agreed scope (balance, EQ, compression, no new recording). Extra rounds or stem changes after start may bill as additional hours. Plan feedback within a few business days so the project stays fresh.
Next step is often mastering at €72 per track or €545 per album. Release metadata is separate; see mastering metadata for release.
Common mistakes
- Stems without a reference mix — the mixer cannot hear your intent.
- Different lengths because an effect tail was cut off.
- Duplicate stereo files that phase when summed to mono.
- Missing tempo or capo notes on acoustic parts.
- Late delivery while release is already scheduled.
Validate by importing everything into an empty session and listening on headphones before upload.
Delivery and next steps
Send a track list with your upload. We confirm receipt within 2 business days and estimate turnaround. Business clients: invoice with 14 days to pay when agreed.
Storage and processing of files is covered in the privacy policy and data processing agreement for B2B. Still need tracking? Vocal recording or choosing mics in the live room help you capture a clean source first.
